California just became the fourth U.S. state to pass a net neutrality law, with strong cross-party support. We’ve taken a big step forward for Internet users thanks to hard work locally, thousands taking action through our site, and support from EFF’s members like you around the world. Thank you.

Progress in California could signal a brighter path for many states working to protect their residents, but the fight there has just begun.

Ever since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to abandon the carefully-crafted Open Internet order, EFF has been fighting tooth and nail to restore sensible protections for Internet users. Yet within hours of passing California’s historic bill, the FCC and Department of Justice (DOJ) moved to block it by suing the state.

Shockingly, they insist the FCC can discard its federal oversight role, but simultaneously prevent states from filling that vacuum.

We intend to fight for an Internet beyond the ISP monopolies, corporate platform giants, and restrictive content cartels. EFF is actively participating in the Washington, D.C. Circuit case upon which the government’s challenge depends, and we look forward to explaining to a judge why the FCC and DOJ are wrong on California.
